Rhaz Oriente
A long lightbox of blue water glowing on the floor of an art fair booth

Untitled (14.5188° N, 120.7580° E), 2024

The title is a set of coordinates, and they point at the venue where the work was shown. That ground used to be part of Manila Bay before it was reclaimed, and the bay is still across the road. Oriente had been thinking about that stretch of water for a while, and this is where the interest took its first form.

The work lies low on the floor, a little over half a metre wide and nearly two metres long, printed with an image of the bay’s water and lit from within. It sits like a piece of the bay set down indoors, and its glow carries across the floor of the fair.

The light is not fixed. Oriente programmed it using weather data for Manila Bay from OpenWeather, so its colours and transitions shift through the duration of the fair. It was the first time she used data as a material in her installations.
