Rhaz Oriente
A wall of coloured stained glass panels lit from within, casting orange light

Interstice, 2024

Interstice is a free-standing wall, 5 by 6 feet, set in the middle of the gallery. Its face is a grid of stained glass panels, each 10 × 10 inches. The glass is red, yellow and almost black, some smooth, some rippled or pebbled. LED lights inside the wall make every panel glow, and the colour that lands on the surrounding walls and floor is different from the glass itself: pink, blue, yellow and green.

Oriente often works with void, emptiness and transparency, and keeps returning to materials that light can pass through. She is interested in how that light moves out into the room. Here the gaps between the panels are part of the work too, for the moments we pass over without noticing.

She works in a gallery and spends most of her days among walls, and says this has shaped how she makes work. The piece is built like a window, but it opens onto nothing, so the eye stays in the room. With Interstice, her interest moved from perception towards the spatial conditions that shape how a place is experienced.
